Malcolm Stringer (1968-75) sent in this newspaper scan, probably from the Croydon Advertiser, of his Father John F E Stringer (1933-37) winning the first year high jump in 1934, along with photos of the medal that was presented. He added that JFS was never an academic, and left school at the earliest opportunity to pursue a career in mechanical engineering. In due course, he designed and manufactured the well known "E W Lathe" (see http://www.lathes.co.uk/ew/index.html), but the product was not commercially successful, and he subsequently turned his attention to the manufacture of press tools for the printed circuit board industry, which thankfully did prove to be a little more lucrative. He died in 1985 aged 62.
